All three of our podcast microphone recommendations are dynamic, but remember that dynamic and condenser microphones can be used interchangeably for podcast and voiceover applications, but given the context of most podcast recording environments you’re more likely to want a dynamic microphone with strong room noise rejection.

If you're recording in more controlled environments with less potential background noise, you might want to consider the Buyer’s Guide for Voiceover Microphones as you’ll get more natural sounding audio with a condenser mic.

Both The Hobbyist and Independent picks feature USB and XLR connections which gives you options if you’re only able to record directly into a computer (USB) or into an audio recorder (XLR.)Pricing Tier Key

The Hobbyist: Entry-level gear for video shooters to improve their skills without a large investment.

The Independent: Prosumer gear designed for serious creators that balance performance and real-world budgets.

The Industry Pro: High-end gear for professionals that meets the demands of industry-tier production environments.

The Hobbyist

Samson Q2U | $69

A great mic to start a first-time podcast. With both USB and XLR outputs, the background noise rejection is good, and its solid build makes it durable for banging around into any recording environment.

The Independent

Shure MV7+ | $279

A great sounding mic that can grow with you. Offering both USB and XLR outputs makes it great for a breezy computer setup and for those transitioning to more professional setups. Such a good value. (A little secret for you: Joel’s voiceover in the course was recorded entirely with the MV7.)
